The Lord's Supper

The Lord’s Supper, also known as Communion, is another key distinctive for Christians, especially in Baptist churches. It is one of the two ordinances (along with baptism) that Jesus commanded His followers to observe (Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26).

Baptists believe the Lord’s Supper is a symbolic act of obedience, commemorating Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross. The bread represents His body, and the cup represents His blood, both given for the forgiveness of sins. It is not a means of receiving grace or salvation, but a memorial and proclamation of Christ’s death until He returns (1 Corinthians 11:26).

Participation in the Lord’s Supper is reserved for baptized believers who have examined themselves and are walking in fellowship with Christ and His church (1 Corinthians 11:27-29).
